research and planning: model shots

I like these two pictures of my model as they are good quality and generally make her look very pretty, however the personality is not as 'cheeky' as I would like and I don't feel  they are strong enough to be on the cover and catch the audiences eye.

I like these two pictures because they are good quality and both portray the 'cheeky' personality that I want for my model however the first photo doesn't have the plain background that I want for my cover. The second I really like and will consider for my cover.

I like these two photos and would consider to use them for my double page spread. they are both good quality and I think either of them could be considered for my double page spread.

research and planning; artist name ideas

For my magazine I will have one main artist on my cover and double page spread and I am also planning to have either a boy band or boy duo featured in my contents page. As my main artist has a 50's look I need to make sure that her name matches this therefore I have looked at similar artists such as Paloma Faith and Lana Del Rey and tried to use their names as inspiration, I also searched different websites for things such as 'unusual girls names' or 'girls names from the 50's'. From this research I came up with the name 'Dixie Q', I like it because it really suits the image that I am trying to stick to and also would draw a reader to a magazine if it was on the front page because it is so unusual. For the boy band/duo I wanted to come up with something completely random, again to draw the audience in. I researched again searching 'unusual band names' and came up with a few;

  • Alien puppets
  • Baloney poneys
  • flying elmos
Although these names make absolutely no sense at all, they will be remembered!

research and planning; make up test shots

This is the make up test shot that I have done. I used my model and the exact style of make up that I want. From these test shots I wont change anything as I think the make up suits the model and photographs well.

research and planning: model head shots

The first and third models would not be appropriate for my cover as I would like a female, however the third photo would be suitable for my contents page because he has the kind of chart look I am looking for. The second photo has a chart look however I am looking for a 50s inspired model and I don't know whether she would suit the look. The fourth photo would not be appropriate as she has more of a 'pop' look rather than the 50s inspired chart look I am going for.

research and planning: double page spread research

These double page spreads are examples of Q+A sessions between the artist and interviewer. This is a good way to interview because it is easy to get the information that you want by asking the artist a direct question. The layout is usually the question in one colour and then the answer underneath in a different colour.

These are both examples of writing about an artist and just including quotes from them. This is a good way to get a lot of information in about the artist and add quotes from them to back up the facts. The layout usually includes a large title and picture and then paragraphed writing.
This is an example of diary entries stating particular things that the artist is getting up to. This can be written by them or by the writer of the article who will usually be with the artist following their movements. This is usually in the layout of one colour for the date and another colour for the entry. It could also include pictures of the artist whilst doing some of the things in the entries.

research and planning: top 40 chart this week

http://www.bigtop40.com/chart/archive/2012/46/

Click on the link to see the top 40 chart for this week. This is relevant to my magazine as it is a chart music magazine and therefore it will contain a music chart in it somewhere.

research and planning: SLR test shots

This is an indoor picture with a flash on, I think the colour looks quite yellow and the picture is quite boring because it isn't a picture of anything imparticular.
This picture is indoor with the flash on, I think this picture looks good because you can really see he contrast between black and white.
This is outdoor without a flash and on the landscape setting, I focused the camera myself.
This is outdoor with a flash on the landscape setting, i focused the camera myself.
This is outdoor without a flash on the detail setting. I really like this photo especially how it is out of focus in parts.
This is indoor with a flash, again it looks yellow.

Research and planning: my plan for the week

This week I aim to;
  • do my podcast
  • post my audience interview questions and videos
  • Post my drawn redrafts of music magazine shaped by audience feedback
  •  do my publication plan
  • do two additional research posts that are personal to my genre
  • do model head shots
  • SLR test shots with analysis

research and planning: audience feedback videos

From these videos I can see that my masthead is appropriate as they all agreed that it was. 2/3 interviews said to use a medium close up on my cover so this is what I will do. The layout of my contents page is appropriate however I need to rethink the masthead. My interviews tell me that they would be willing to pay £3 for my magazine. They would like to see audience interviews mainly in my magazine.

research and planning: audience interview questions

Do you think my masthead is appropriate? Why?
Do you think I should use a medium close up of my model on the cover or a full body shot?
Do you think the layout of my contents page is appropriate for my magazine? Why?
How much would you pay for the magazine?
What sort of articles would you like to see in the magazine?
