research and planning: analysis of magazine cover

From both of the magazine covers it is clear that the magazine is aimed at teenagers/young adults. One of the reasons for this is because the artists on the front are both young women that aim their music towards teenagers and young adults in-particular. Also, the clothes that they are wearing portray the younger image. the magazine cover with Beyonce on also says 'women's music', this obviously gives the impression that the magazine is aimed at women.
The layout of each of the covers has the model as the centre point of the page. On the cover with Beyonce it is a medium long shot and the one of Miley is a mid shot. Both of the pictures cover some of the masthead, this suggests that readers will already be familiar with the cover enough to be able to know what it is without seeing the whole masthead. The covers stick to the three colour rule which makes them very easy on the eye and very easy to see the different parts of the cover. The coverlines are very easy to to read, they stand our and the get straight to the point.
The colours and images of both of the women makes the magazine give an 'older' vibe and quite serious, however like I said before, the artists attract younger ages.

Research and planning: college magazine analysis

The masthead on my magazine is at the top of my page and easy to read as it is the first thing your eyes are drawn to. It is also the name of the college so you instantly know what the magazine will be about. My cover lines are easy and large enough to read however I couldn't fit on as many as I wanted to because the picture was larger than expected.
I stuck to the three colour rule using green and pink for my writing and blue for my background.
It is easy to tell that the contents and cover are from the same magazine because they use the same three colour rule and they use the same writing font.
I think the photo on the cover of the magazine is appropriate because she is a student that attends the college and even if you didn't know that you can tell that she is college age. I think the photo on the contents page is relevant because it is a picture of the college however I think I should have also added another picture of a student on the the contents page.
Although I didn't write the names of the stories on the contents page, they would have been the stories that were on the cover and a few more that are relevant to students.

Research and planing: Magazine cover and contents page

This is my completed magazine cover and mock up of my contents page. Since last time I have added cover lines. To do this I used the text tool and also added a drop shadow to them and used the move tool to move them to where I wanted. I also added the college logo to the bottom, to do this I opened the photo in photoshop and used the magnetic lasso tool to cut it out. I then moved it to the bottom of the magazine cover.

Research and planning: College magazine so far

This is my college magazine so far. I have used the text tool to create the masthead and writing underneath it, I have also used a drop shadow on the writing. I have used the paint bucket tool to colour the background in blue. I have also uploaded the photo and opened it in photoshop, I then used the magnetic lasso tool to cut it out and the move tool to drag it onto the background. I used the spot healing brush tool to remove any blemishes and added another layer and took don the opacity to make her skin look more polished.

Research and planning: interview questions

1. What sort of cover lines do you think i should include on the cover?
2. What do you think of my colour scheme? Could you suggest any changes?
3. The magazine would be free, however if you was asked to make a small donation to help with the costs of making the magazine would you? What would make you choose to make a donation?
4. Does the masthead look appropriate? Why?
5. Would you be likely to read the magazine? Why?

Research and planning: Examples of medium close up

These are examples of medium close-up shots, I will need to use a medium close-up image for my college magazine.

Research and planning: college magazine analysis

  • The magazine clearly has the masthead college magazine so that people know its aimed at people in college. Aged 18/21.
  • Has cover lines that say things that relate to college, i.e. 'Campus', 'spring break' and 'college couture'.
  • The picture is a young male carrying college books.
  • There is an issue number, date and barcode so this would be bought by college students.

Research and planning: Indesign tutorial

I first found a review of the hunger games and a picture and saved them to a word document. I then opened up an indesign document and went on layout to create three guides so that my writing would be in columns. I then went on file and place to get the review and dragged the writing across to fit into the columns, I then did the same with the picture. Then I used the type tool to create a text box that I could write my title in, I then changed the size and the colour. After this I added a stroke in a different colour. Finally I created a background by clicking on the rectangle tool and choosing a colour then dragging it over the review. I then right clicked on the review and put the rectangle behind everything else to create a background.

Research and planning: Photoshop challenge

  • I first opened up an A4 document by going on file, pressing new and selecting A4 document.
  •  I then used the text tool to write a title and altered the font and size.
  • Then I used the move tool to move the text in to the middle of the page and selected the colour red to change the colour.
  • I then clicked onto the background layer and then used the paint bucket tool and selected the colour blue to colour the background blue.
  • I then clicked back onto the text layer and highlighted it. Then I added a drop shadow.
  • I then found a picture on the internet and saved it and opened it in photoshop.
  • I used the brush tool to change the hair colour.
  • Finally, I used the rectangle tool to make a rectangle larger than the picture of the person and then moved the layer so the picture of the person was on the top.

Research and planning: Skin tutorial

  • First I used the spot healing brush tool to hide any blemishes on the photo.
  • I then used the smart blur and added another layer to add layer mask.
  • I then used the brush tool to change her hair colour, blusher, eye make-up and lipstick. To do this I altered the size of the size of the brush, type of brush and opacity.

Research and planning: film poster

I first found an image of the original Kung Fu Panda poster. I then found a picture of Jack Black and saved them both to the desktop. I then opened them both in photoshop.  I then used the magnetic lasso tool to cut around Jack's face and the move tool to move it onto the original poster. When I had done this I used the eraser to get rid of some of the white marks and then used the colour balance to make the picture fit in with the colours of the poster better.

Reseach and planning: Photoshop CD tutorial

I first opened three images, one was a musical background, one was a CD and one was a horn. I started off by using the cut tool to cut the CD disk and then used the move tool to drag the picture across on to the background. I then used the colour balance to change the colour of the disk. Then I moved onto the horn, I used the magic wand to select an area of white and then selected the rest of the white. I inverted it so that the horn was selected and I could then move it across onto the background. I again used the colour balance to alter the colour. I then used the layers bar to select the musical notes. Then I added text using the text tool and added a back shadow. Finally I selected the background on the layers bar and created a wave effect.
